Non-toxic makeup series: part 1

Exclusive selfcare and skincare email list

Lip products

Keeping your lips hydrated while still getting a pop of color is a tall order in the makeup industry. Most times my favorite rich lip color would leave my lips pealing the next day. Here’s where natural ingredients can help: think moisturizing plant oils and performance botanical extracts. Also, let’s be honest, a good amount of lip balms/ lipsticks get ingested throughout the day so never skimp on non-toxic ingredients. I think it is important to not only have your go-to bold lipsticks to make you feel divine, but to have daily moisturizing lip balms as well. These non-toxic lip products are listed from balms to the most opaque stains. Every product linked here never compromises on high quality ingredients that will have you wanting to buy every shade.

The natural makeup revolution is here

We know that the brands we used growing up are full of toxic ingredients that made our makeup stay all day, but can have lasting negative effects on our skin and body. Thankfully, there are brands pioneering forward to healthier options and cleaner cosmetics.

My standards

I am a holistic licensed Esthetician that believes you should never have to be scared of what you put on your skin. Ingredients lists can be misleading and so I’ve spent months finding the best non-toxic makeup products for you. In this post these lip products had to fall into these three categories:

  1. No toxic ingredients- ever. No hormone disruptors, no organ toxicity (reproductive or otherwise), no fragrance and preferably ingredients derived from nature.
  2. Not harsh on your skin. Everyone’s skin is different, and I’ve listed ingredients that may be trouble for certain skin types.
  3. It has to work. I worked doing makeup artistry years back and understand the importance of makeup’s efficiency. I’ve provided various details on coverage, opaqueness, etc. depending on what it is you are looking for the product to do for your skin.

Many times articles similar to this one contain affiliate links where the publisher is being paid for their promotion of the brand. This article contains NO affiliate links because I wanted to be able to take a 100% objective view of these non-toxic lip products.

Also, just because I recommend a certain product from a brand does NOT mean that I recommend every product from that brand. There are very few brands that completely contain clean ingredients and if I didn’t post about a product I probably did not like the ingredients list.

Companies are constantly changing ingredients. I will try to keep this post relevant, but if you notice a change in formula or have a concern about an ingredient please email me ([email protected]) or fill out a contact form so I can update the post.

Lux organic lip conditioner (901) *

Vapour organic beauty $20

TIPS: Apply after moisturizing your face with your Elderflower + Avocado Moisturizer to get a complete facial moisturizing experience.

PRO: Feels protective, very neutral smell/taste. Furthermore, this is great underneath lipstick, gloss or stain to keep your lips soft even after lip colors set.

FAVORITE INGREDIENT: Fig, apricot and plum flavoring oils used instead of synthetic flavoring/ masking agents. This gives this non-toxic lip product soothing and protecting skin properties while maintaining a pleasant lip experience.

CON: Works more like a non-toxic treatment and less like a balm. Basically, it is somewhat temporary, doesn’t last like a daily lip balm would.

su/Stain matte lip stain (marsala) *

Au Naturale $25

TIPS: For a more moisturizing application apply a lip balm then pat off excess balm prior to applying stain.

My two cents

I thoroughly believe that you should feel good in your skin even with no makeup and that’s why I designed my skincare line. I know that the journey to feeling lovely without makeup is a long one filled with up’s and down’s. Alternatively, I think makeup should be available to enhance your natural beauty without compromising your skin. I hope these non-toxic lip products help bring you to a place where you can utilize makeup as an option and not a necessity. Please reach out with any questions you may have or comment below.
