Often times high exertion, embarrassing situations or extreme temperatures have a similar affect on our skin: increased circulation. While rosy cheeks may not seem like a skin care treatment, I’d like to shed some light on this under appreciated physical reaction.
What causes poor circulation?
Some common culprits of poor circulation are stress, stagnanation or aging. There are even times where your body is busy doing other things and your skin is last on the list. While activity like a regular yoga practice or walk can help get that blood pumping, there are ways during a skin treatment that I can help encourage good circulation.
Why is good circulation important for happy healthy skin?
Skin that is experiencing poor circulation often looks dull and can appear blotchy. Other unfortunate results of poor circulation include premature aging. Skin with good circulation has a healthy glow and skin cells are nourished while stimulating collagen production.
How can a facial help?
Through lymphatic massage, kneading and pressure point massage, good circulation will be encouraged and the skin will be detoxed to help clear complexion. Facial massage is definitely sets a professional facial apart from an at home DIY facial.
-steam & hot towels
Warming the skin helps brings blood to your skin cells. Skin cells that receive the blood they need are nourished and can function at a higher level.
Alternating hot and cold helps to increase circulation as well. The cold jade roller can give your skin a radiant glow. This Chinese medicine practice has been around for a long while to reduce the look of wrinkles and reduce puffiness.
This ancient Chinese practice helps decongest skin, improve blood circulation, reduce signs of aging, clarify for breakouts and decongest sinuses. During this treatment a flat stone or porcelain spoon is used to oxygenate the skin with gentle sweeping motions. The lifting techniques help to tighten skin by stimulating collagen production while the detoxifying movements will clear the complexion and smooth texture.
My father’s side of the family is from Hong Kong, and I still remember my Aunt showing me jade facial tools for the first time. I could never understand, as a child, how these precious stones could do a great deal for my skin (how this would come full circle to how I use it in my treatments today).
Some of these practices are standard to my facials. A good example of this is hot towels and facial massage. Other treatments are enhancements depending on your preference and skin care goals. If you ever need help navigating your appointment options please reach out!
